One thing we encounter on a regular basis is the need to ask customers to decipher their key.
Going over the key blank and explaining how it is labeled often is necessary. Just in case you are ever asked, it is helpful to know that the 3 letter and number combination stamped under the key brand designate the type of keyway that the key opens. Keyway refers to the type of lock. In the case of this key, it is a Schlage product, indicated by SC. The number refers to the number of cuts the blank will hold. A Locksmith may also ask you about the "bitting" of the key, meaning how many cuts it has, whether there are cuts near the bow or tip, etc.
Theft of keys from locked or unlocked vehicles has been a problem lately. Several customers in the last few weeks have had their keys stolen and needed new ones. So make a point of keeping your keys out of unwanted reach. It never hurts to know your key!
