Sometimes tenant dissonance can be a problem.
You want only certain doors used for the safety and best maintenance of your building while door users want a quick exit. The solution may be simple; installing a panic bar with an alarm often discourages your building users from exiting at will. The alarm is set to notify you specifically and definitely communicates the doors use to all the others in the building. Just something to consider for enhanced control, and safety.
We just installed this panic bar unit and door closer on a Leduc building last week. The owners and managers were very pleased with the result. Installation time was easy to estimate and affordable, quality hardware found from good sources and the end result was a more secure and controlled building. Definitely a good idea.
No. Not us (Capstone Security Concepts, Inc.) but the Canada Safety Council. They have some good advice for Canadians!
"National Community Safety and Crime Prevention Month"
It happens in November each year and it is all about getting the residents of Canada aware of security concerns. The folks who run and support the Canada Safety Council get a big thumbs up from us for the advice in their newsletter this month.
As we've been subject to suspicious activity most recently in Millet, we can't agree more with their recommendations to focus on exterior lighting and to, as they put it ,"Outfit your doors with good, sturdy locks." They go on to say that "... a secure and sturdy lock will make break-ins more difficult." We would also stress that it is not only locks, but well framed and sturdy doors and window openings that make all the difference. Your lock is only as good as the door it is on, so avoid doors with glass panes and weak internal components.
There are more good tips in their newsletter, so we highly recommend reading it on the Canada Safety Council website: it could make a great difference in your security!

Thanks for Reading, and as always,
It seems Amazon is getting in on the security market as well.
Though I shudder to call it such.
With the rampant trending of remote, cloud-based control over normally key-controlled areas, should it be called the “convenience market?” Now, more than ever, the friction between security and convenience seems to be increasing, with security compromised the most.
Take for example, Amazon’s new delivery option: Amazon Key.
Read about it HERE
Would you really feel comfortable allowing a stranger to unlock your home with the push of a button? Available for Amazon Prime members only, it includes a special electronic lock and an in-home, jazzy looking security camera that sits pointed at your door, allowing you to watch the delivery being placed in your home.
Supposedly, Amazon promises to reimburse losses should theft occur, but only in some cases.
I'm thinking...If nothing else, it will motivate people to keep their entryways cleaner!
Think Secure. (I hope you do!) Think Capstone.
We've been out in Leduc, Wetaskiwin and Millet this week; re-keying homes and doing non-destructive entry. We have to admit it folks, we're on to you! Nobody likes having to make that call to the Locksmith. We know, we've been there. (Yeah, we were the "handy with the coat hanger" types, rescuing all our friends to save them a buck!)
But it can be embarrassing and stressful not knowing the impending cost if entry, being out in inclement weather or in dangerous parts of town and feeling unsafe. The cool thing is, if you call us, we take the time to help you walk through your options, give tips on safe self entry and set your mind at ease if hiring our services really is your best choice. We also do a follow up call to make sure you are in safely.
So here are some things we recommend to our callers.
So remember, no matter the hour, we take your calls and will help you troubleshoot your lock or find you the fastest service near you.
As the seasons change, keep safe and think secure!
Good Day to All.
Come on and Comment!
We want to hear your lock out stories!
Seeing it again. Security camera footage is pixelated and not very great in helping identify suspects.
This time its a young lady with a mask on, who strolls by the camera and successfully escapes after robbing the business.
There must be a more efficient way of identifying suspects. I know we've set our sights on getting better security for businesses and homes at affordable prices.
So stay tuned.
And as always,
Been called on by lake home owners lately. We've opened trailers, house doors and vehicles this summer, as one of the only locksmith companies servicing the lake areas.
Being locked out during a vacation stay can be a hassle, especially in remote locations. Being centrally located helps us get to people in the best time. It is great to save people the cost of repairing hardware and other damages from forced entry or poor installation.
We've been busy re-installing hardware as well. Lake properties rely heavily on hardware as their first line of defense. As homes and possessions are left unattended, deterring an intruder is crucial. Non-locking doors and poorly defended frames are not worth the risk.
Choose to get it done right the first time and save in the long run. We'll be ready to respond to your call 24 hours a day.
Think Secure, Think Capstone
Aug. 2 Job Highlight...
Another case of a Wieser smart lock malfunctioning...this time on the garage, not allowing the owner to gain access. Opened up lock. Replaced lock and re-keyed locks on house and garage.
Kicked-in doors, damaged door frames and doors needing massive corrections were the theme of a recent job in an urban area. We stayed on site until every door in the unit was secured to satisfaction. As in other cases, this kept us unexpectedly late into the night without added charge to the customer. It's always interesting to work while surrounded by renters and city life!
Good to know that one apartment complex is closer to providing better security for its renters.
As always, Think Secure. Think Capstone.
Another Need For a Locksmith
Real estate owners may not be aware of insurance requirements before demolishing older rental units. Often a house must be professionally secured beforehand to avoid legal issues. Make sure you call your home insurer to determine requirements if you are looking to re-build on a rental property.
A local locksmith should be able to meet your needs, even last minute.
Best Wishes to all home owners...and happy real estate season!
Think Secure. Think CAPSTONE.
Hunting down a good replacement safe for a local business is always a challenge to enjoy, though it always proves exhausting. Customers give a budget with specifications and the hunt begins.
A recent job provided this opportunity. I found a safe perfectly suited for the customer's budget and security needs. Eureka!
300 lbs later and the enjoyment of drilling through concrete like butter with a rented Hilti Hammer Drill (Thank you Rental House!) and I could confidently leave behind another secured customer.
Thank you Leduc Businesses for putting the skills of qualified tradesmen to good work!
It's a pleasure doing business in your county.
These are actually the famous last words of a certain movie. (Know what it is? Comment below!) But does a Locksmith just handle doors and locks? What more is there to Locksmithing?
In brief, a Locksmith can best be described as a "Diversified Tradesman." The earliest Locksmiths were blacksmiths and metalworkers with mechanical minds and refined motor skills. They were the magicians who could fix anything, get in anywhere and invent anything that was needed. It was all part of their highly refined, diversified trade skills.
These remain the skills and characteristics
Recognizing this fact, the province of Alberta began regulating the trade in 2011. This was to insure a higher level of security for customers (and regulate break-in tools) as well as to provide a specific training requirement.
This means that, like all other professional trades, a Locksmith must attend a 4 year apprenticeship program at a designated institution.
Once a Certified Journeyman Locksmith (CJL), maintaining a Security License with the Solicitor's General of Alberta yearly is required to do business. This License requires liability insurance and criminal record checks yearly.
The 4 year Apprentice Journeyman Program covers, among other trade specifics, in depth study of keys and keying systems (auto and door), commercial and residential doors and hardware, security survey, access control systems and master-keying.
Hands-on training involves refining skills in electrical, welding, carpentry and lock/safe manipulation and entry.
A trained Locksmith should be able to disassemble, repair and reassemble your locking mechanism promptly and proficiently when doing so is in your best interest financially. He should know what hardware will meet your specific needs and have access to products and tools not available to the general public.
Locksmiths can offer key-controlled systems, re-keying services and many other trade specific skills not offered by general contractors. They are also helpful in aiding in residential repair from forced entry (owner or otherwise) and advising homeowners on how to secure their property.
One way of safeguarding your company and saving on continual re-keying charges is by requesting a system of locks and keys that are exclusive to your commercial property.
Our company purchases lock cylinders and keys directly through a supplier inaccessible to the public. These keys are provided to your facility in the quantity needed and stamped "Do Not Duplicate." Each key is then assigned to a keyholder in your company. Since the keys cannot be duplicated (the blanks are not available at any public supplier), this allows you to retain control over the keys to your building.
As we've quoted these systems this month, we've noticed that some companies were not aware of the benefit of having a local Locksmith Service Provider facilitate this system for them. Capstone is ready to serve Wetaskiwin and Leduc County in this area and looks forward to answering any questions you may have about applying it to your commercial property.
When it comes to Home security, the hardware a consumer chooses could make all the difference. Be aware of hardware quality to make an informed decision on your home security.
While a monitored home security system is still a good choice for home owners (due to discounts on insurance and police response time), the hardware offered by the various companies offering installation and service can be still sub-standard security wise.
For example, the main entry lock chosen by most security vendors of late, while one of the most affordable that can be controlled remotely (even purchased outside of a security contract), is incredibly easy to compromise. (don't ask us how, just enter your front door lock brand into a YouTube search with "how to defeat ...." in front of it.)
Also, camera quality makes a huge difference as to whether having survelliance will even make a difference in deterring or identifying an intruder. (We recommend 1080p pixel quality or higher for clear identification purposes.)
It's true, budget has an impact on the amount consumers can afford to invest in home security services. However, Locksmiths and other security professionals often offer free security surveys and tips that will help guide decisions on hardware when approaching a monitored security vendor. Keep in mind that each company usually sells only one brand of hardware... do your research first, talk to a qualified hardware professional and then make a decision.

I want to take a moment to discuss a much misunderstood document from a Locksmith perspective. It is the Residential Tenancies Act of Alberta. Sometimes I get calls from landlords or tenants who are clearly unaware of the Regulations in this document regarding re-keying and entry into their rental properties. The Act defines specific time frames for eviction, re-keying and entry into a rental property. It is meant to safe-guard the rights of both the landlord and tenant and give legal guidelines should there be a dispute at any time.
As a security professional, a Locksmith is bound by law to make sure this Act is upheld. It may come off as being hard-nosed, but a professional Locksmith cannot agree to open any property deemed a rental premisis without verifying identity, ownership and that proper regulations have been followed. He's probably learned from training and experience that he may be implicated in criminal intent if he doesn't do so. Entry can trigger alarm systems unknown to the landlord, tenants can call the police if they feel their rights are being infringed and the whole situation can get pretty messy.
If you are a landlord or tenant, being familiar with this handy guide to the Residential Tenancies Act of Alberta is a must. Take the time to look through the sections regarding eviction, re-keying and entry regulations. It is important to note that the Act applies to all Landlord and Tenant relationships in the province of Alberta regardless of whether a lease or contract of any form has been signed.
(You can also view the entire document on the Queen's printer, but the guide is much easier to read and more clearly written.)
* Make sure to get the most competitive rates for re-keying and entry for your rental properties in the Leduc/Millet area. Not all Locksmiths are priced alike. Quality workmanship is also a factor if any damage is done to your door frame or locks. You want to hire someone who has technical qualifications. Beware of the cheapest price and demand to see proof of journeyman/apprentice status from any technician that shows up for the job. Best Wishes to all Landlords and Tenants! *
